Generating art with AI has become a widespread practice, with 43% of web designers now leveraging the technology to improve their designs. Yet, AI is rapidly developing and improving beyond simple 2D designs. In fact, thanks to 3D modeling company Tafi, it can now be used to produce video content.
What Is Tafi’s AI-Driven Text-to-3D?
Tafi recently developed a revolutionary text-to-3D design tool, Daz, that allows users to enter text prompts and then generates a 3D character model based on their input. Its website explains:
“Tafi operates Daz 3D, a leading content creation platform, serving millions of professional and recreational artists worldwide. Its catalog includes more than five million 3D assets, many of which are high-resolution and interoperable, and exportable to other leading software programs.”
Just like any generative AI model, Tafi harnesses the power of an extensive dataset – carefully labeled and structured – derived from its proprietary Genesis character platform. This rich dataset of 3D models serves as a solid groundwork for training their model, which, combined with text input, generates exceptional 3D character models.
Benefits of Text-to-3D
Text-to-3D offers an extremely different experience from traditional 3D model design. So, why might someone choose to use a text-to-3D generation model like Tafi’s instead of employing a traditional designer?
Swift Operation: Text-to-3D allows users and designers to generate detailed character models in a matter of seconds, requiring no more than a text prompt. This makes the design process much more efficient.
Text-Driven: Because Tafi’s 3D engine is text-driven, it can be easily operated by anyone, regardless of their design knowledge.
Ethics-Conscious: Content assets work on an “opt-in” basis, meaning artists are paid for their work and models the engine uses.
Compatibility: Character models can be directly exported into other programs, such as Blender, Unreal, and Unity.
Currently, Tafi’s text-to-3D engine is still in beta and has limited public access. As a result, not all of the model’s benefits are completely clear yet. This means that many more advantages are likely to be found as the technology is further developed and becomes more accessible.
Use Cases of Text-to-3D
While text-to-3D technology is not something that will typically be used in everyday life, it does have several bespoke use cases, including:
Game Development: Text-to-3D is an excellent addition to a game designer's tool suit, as it allows swift creation of character models, saving time and money that can be spent elsewhere.
Animation: Animation can be made simpler with text-to-3D technology. With animators having to spend less time on character design, they can dedicate more time to actual animation. It’s also likely that, as this technology develops, animation options will be added, whether in Tafi’s tool or an alternative.
Virtual Reality: Text-to-3D models can be used in virtual reality environments much in the same way they can be used for game development.
Education: In education, text-to-3D could also be used to teach students the basics of character design and AI prompt engineering.
As Tafi’s text-to-3D model becomes publicly available, it’s likely that many more potential use cases will arise.
Drawbacks of This Technology
As with all new models of AI technology, text-to-3D is not without its drawbacks and risks. So, as the technology is developed further, here are a few issues to consider.
Job Losses: The recent rise of generative AI has sparked fears of job losses across almost all industries. In fact, AI was responsible for 5% of job losses in May alone. Text-to-3D technology brings the risk of additional job losses for 3D designers and animators.
Deepfakes: As this technology advances, it will likely get better at creating certain styles of characters, including realistic models. As a result, text-to-3D technology could be used to make replicating images of real people easier for use in deepfake media.
Reduced Design Customization: As more designers come to rely on text-to-3D technology, we find a reduction in customization. Though Tafi’s engine allows users to adjust the 3D models using sliders, it’s likely to restrict users without actual design knowledge from further customizing models.
A New Era of 3D Design?
Overall, Tafi’s text-to-3D technology appears to have few drawbacks and risks, making it an excellent engine to empower the future of 3D design. However, at such an early stage in its development, many of its features and applications remain to be seen. It’s likely that this technology will advance quickly, just like other generative AI models such as ChatGPT.
